Kapamilya actress Jodi Sta. Maria starred in a new horror film called “Clarita.” The film was directed by Derick Cabrido and was produced by Black Sheep.

KAMI learned that Clarita was based on true events. It was considered as one of the first cases of demonic possession in Manila way back in 1953.

Clarita Villanueva was arrested for vagrancy and was detained in Old Bilibid prison. Former Manila Mayor Arsenio Lacson let Clarita be studied with different doctors and mental health professionals who later on diagnosed her with different mental illnesses.

Due to the unfortunate turn of events, exorcists Father Salvador and Father Benedicto also went to see Clarita and sought for salvation.

The Positive

Jodi Sta. Maria had exquisite acting in the horror film. Despite admitting that it was her most challenging role, Jodi showed her versatility and award-winning acting skills in Clarita.

She was able to meet the needed physical and emotional acting for her character, most especially in times of demonic possession.

The Negative

Given the fact that the film was inspired by a true story, the film lacked a unique contribution in terms of sharing knowledge about demonic possession which made the plot quite predictable.

As mentioned by Francis Joseph Cruz in Rappler, the film had many characters and tackled way too many issues and failed to focus on anything as well.

Last Say

Jodi undeniable deserves a best actress nod for her powerful performance in the movie. Her talent and skills gave much more impact on the storytelling of Cabrido and gave justice to the story.
