The Philippines is considered as a powerhouse country when it comes to international pageants like the Miss Universe.
The win of Pia Wurtzbach in 2015 and Catriona Gray just this year proved that we are a nation to beat in beauty competitions across the globe.
However, there were speculations that circulated on social media targeting the representatives of Philippines as not pure Filipinas.
It was said that several countries such as Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, Costa Rica, Poland, and South Korea have petitioned to ban half-blooded candidates from joining the Miss Universe.
According to one of the countries that allegedly joined the petition, it is unethical that the Philippines is the only Asian country that has been sending half-blooded representatives to the prestigious pageant over the last five years.
“We really think this is an insult not only to the organization but to the whole Asian region,” the viral Facebook report said.
“The Philippines is the only Asian country to use half-Filipina contestant in the last five years. There is no law that has been violated but it is ethically unacceptable,” it added.

However, in a report issued by Rappler, the official fact-checking partner of Facebook, the circulating rumors that half-Filipinas are banned from joining the aforementioned pageant is a hoax.
In fact, the rules of Miss Universe do not specifically state that the ones who can join the prominent contest are those who are pure-blooded only.
Moreover, the claim that the Philippines is the only Asian nation that continuously sends half-blooded candidates is not true since the candidate of Japan in Miss Universe 2015 was a Japanese/African-American.
KAMI firmly believes that posting fake news on social media should never be tolerated and that people should be more aware and careful of everything that is posted online.
