Explainer: How Typhoon Ompong compares to 2013 Super Typhoon Yolanda

As reported by PAGASA, Typhoon Mangkhut also known as ‘Ompong’ has accelerated towards Northern Luzon.

However, KAMI has learned that PAGASA has announced that Typhoon Ompong could be weaker than Super Typhoon Yolanda that had greatly affected Visayas back in November 2013.

Now, how does Ompong compares to Yolanda?

As reported by ABS-CBN News, in terms of wind strength as of 8:00 a.m., September 14, 2018, Ompong’s strength was 205 kph, while Yolanda’s wind strength was 215 kph. For the speed, Ompong has been running 20 kph, however, Yolanda’s speed was 30kph.

Ompong’s gustiness is around 255 kph, while Yolanda had 250 kph. And for the diameter, Ompong has a range of 1,010 km and Yolanda had 600 km before. Lastly, for the storm surge, Ompong has approximately up to 6 meters but while in 2013, Yolanda had only 5 to 6 meters.
