Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III and Senator Risa Hontiveros’ discussion in the Senate on August 1 about the SOGIE Equality Bill has become controversial.

KAMI learned that many netizens were not pleased with the comments of Sotto about harassment.

During the discussion, Sotto gave an example of a situation wherein he does not believe that it should be qualified as harassment: a heterosexual man groping another heterosexual man as a form of joke, in a report by the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

“For example yung sinasabi ko, binibiro lang hinipuan na ganun, will they be liable? You said yes. The answer is, I think it’s no,” Sotto said.

Hontiveros replied that if the heterosexual man was offended by the action, he could file a complaint against the other male.

“Yun pong kunyari hinipuan lang that can be, kung naoffend po yung isang heterosexual male pwede niya po yang ireklamo under acts of lasciviousness…

“Ang babaeng hinipuan ng lalake, hindi po namin yun tinatanaw na biro because that truly makes women feel unsafe,” she explained.

Netizens were outraged by the comments of Senator Sotto:

“So pwedeng manghipo pero gawin lang sa joke2 na pamamaraan.... Galing a...”

“Try nyo kaya hipo an ang anak ni tito sen, tapos sabihin nyo na ‘joke only.’ Ano kaya mangyayari?”

“BAKIT ANG TAHIMIK NGAYON NG MGA BUMOTO KAY SOTTO?”

“Lo and behold. The senate president of the great republic.”

“Mahusay tong si tito ko. Pang eat bulaga ang halimbawa.”

In a previous report by KAMI, netizens also bashed Sotto for his offensive comment about single mothers.

He referred to single mothers as “na-ano lang” during a session.

Some of the celebrities who bashed him online were Vice Ganda, Leah Salonga and Pokwang.
