Heart Evangelista breaks down over criticisms, explains rally absence

Actress and fashion icon Heart Evangelista grew emotional as she responded to criticisms surrounding her lifestyle and her absence during the Sept. 21 anti-corruption rallies.

Speaking in a now-expired Instagram livestream, she defended both her career and personal choices amid the controversies linked to the alleged flood-control project anomalies.

"When you start coming for my professional integrity, I crumble into pieces because we all have dreams. I have been working since I was 13 years old. That's 27 years of working non-stop," Evangelista said, noting that she sacrificed a normal childhood for her career. "I missed a lot of opportunities in life. I missed having normal friends; I missed having a lot of high school friends. I didn't go to prom because I worked."

She admitted it was painful that her achievements are being overshadowed now that she is often labeled only as “a mere political wife.”

She recalled how the late Miriam Defensor Santiago insisted on a prenuptial agreement with her husband, Senator Francis "Chiz" Escudero.

"What is mine is mine, what's his is his," Evangelista stressed.

On why she skipped the rallies, the actress explained that threats from bashers had discouraged her participation.

"Why wasn't I in the rally? ... I'm not in the rally is because a lot of people said na huhubaran niyo ako kung pupunta ako sa rally. How cruel can you be? What did I do?"

Evangelista emphasized her independence and dedication to her profession.

"So my number one power was my job... I went to work every godd@mn day, and I am proud of what I am today," she declared.
