Bianca Gonzalez felt overjoyed as some of the female Filipino athletes sent to the Tokyo Summer Olympics are performing well, led by weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz, who won the Philippines’ first-ever Olympic gold medal.
Due to her happiness and excitement, Bianca tweeted: “Isa paaaa!!!! ABANTE BABAE!!!!”
However, one netizen criticized Bianca’s tweet, saying that it would have been more appropriate to say “abante Pilipinas” than “abante babae.” The netizen also wrote that women are getting discriminated against because they are the ones making issues about gender inequality.
“Abante pilipinas.. kaya dini discriminate mga babae dahil puro kayo kayo rin mismo ginagawa nyong issue pagiging babae,” the basher commented.
In response to the netizen, Bianca clarified that her tweet was not meant to say that only women should succeed. She explained that her tweet’s purpose was to empower women who feel like they cannot do certain things because of their gender. The star added that women have been discriminated against for centuries and that is why empowering women is essential.
“Kapag sinabi naming ABANTE BABAE hindi ibig sabihin na babae lamang ang dapat umabante. Ilang daang taon na ang kalalakihan ang nabibigyan ng mga oportunidad kaya't kapag may babaeng nagtatagumpay, ipinagbubunyi natin para mas marami pang kababaihan ang mapagbigyan…
“It's this narrative of ‘kaya dini-discriminate ang mga babae dahil ginagawa ninyong issue ang pagiging babae’ that keeps us from reaching true gender equality. We push for women's empowerment precisely because TOO MANY WOMEN feel like they have no voice and are put into this box…
“Men can be true allies by supporting, encouraging and empowering the women in their lives to do what they want and dream big dreams. Hindi yung, "eto ka lang kasi babae ka lang." Hindi kami "babae lang." BABAE KAMI. ABANTE BABAE,” Bianca replied.
