Pope Francis said he was saddened after learning of former President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III's death.
In a statement he sent to Malacañang and shared on Twitter by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, the pontiff condoled with the Philippines over Aquino's passing.
“Saddened to learn of the death of former President Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the people of the Philippines.”
To recall, Aquino was the president during Francis' visit to the Philippines in January 2015.

Pres. Noynoy Aquino is the 15th President of the Philippines. He ran for office after the death of his mother former Pres. Cory Aquino. His "Daang Matuwid" was the slogan of his term.
Pinky Aquino-Abellada, his sister, then delivered their family’s message on her brother’s death. Pinky likewise publicized in front of media reporters the late politician’s cause of death. She said that Noynoy's death certificate pronounced his death at 6:30 a.m. On behalf of Aquino family, Pinky also said that no words can express how broken their hearts are right now. She also expressed how privileged they are to have him as their brother.
Aquino was buried beside his parents, late former Pres. Corazon Aquino and assassinated opposition Sen. Ninoy Aquino, at the Manila Memorial Park. His dog named Apollo was spotted attending the burial of the late politician on Saturday, June 26. Meanwhile, the viral video showing Apollo touched netizens’ hearts.
