It was placed at Place Jose Rizal in the 9th arrondissement and was noticed missing between October 25 and October 26.
The Philippine Embassy in Paris released a statement expressing regret over the loss of the monument, calling it an important landmark for Filipinos living and visiting the area.
Local authorities in Paris were notified right away. The Embassy is working with them to find out what happened and to monitor the progress of the investigation.
According to the DFA, the bust symbolized the strong and lasting friendship between the Philippines and France.
The motive behind the removal is still unknown, but the DFA noted that public monuments can be targets of vandalism, destruction, or even theft.
The bust and pedestal were unveiled on June 23, 2022. It was known as the only public bust of Rizal in Paris.
Historical records show that Rizal spent time in France in the 1880s while studying and training in ophthalmology.
He continued visiting the country until 1891 when he finished writing his novel El Filibusterismo in Biarritz.
He was executed in 1896 in Bagumbayan, now Luneta Park, for charges of rebellion, sedition, and conspiracy against the Spanish colonial rule.
The Embassy assured the public that they are coordinating with local authorities and the Filipino community to recover or replace the missing bust.
