In Japan, there is only one type of death penalty, and that is execution by hanging.
This method is the only legally approved form of capital punishment in the country.
Hangings are carried out inside designated execution chambers located in selected detention centers, such as those in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and Hiroshima.
The process is done in strict secrecy; inmates are not informed of their execution date until the day it happens.
Even their families and lawyers are only notified after the execution is completed.
The death penalty in Japan is typically reserved for the most serious crimes, particularly cases involving multiple murders or acts considered extremely brutal and premeditated.
Although a person sentenced to death can appeal or request a retrial, once all legal options have been exhausted, the execution may proceed.
Despite international criticism, Japan continues to implement the death penalty, supported by strong public approval.
