A tragic incident unfolded in Malaysia’s Perak state on May 11, when a young elephant was fatally struck by a truck while attempting to cross a highway alongside its mother.

The event drew emotional responses online, particularly after a video emerged showing the grieving mother lingering next to her lifeless calf, Inquirer reported.
The widely shared footage, taken from a passing vehicle, captures the mother elephant with her head resting against the truck involved in the collision, seemingly trying to reach or revive the calf lying motionless underneath.
Local news outlet Sinar Harian reported that the collision took place around 2 a.m. on the East-West Highway and involved a poultry transport truck.

Yusoff Shariff, director of the Perak Wildlife Protection and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), told Sinar Harian that his team was alerted to the situation at approximately 3:30 a.m.
“A male elephant estimated to be five years old died after it was believed to have been hit by a truck while trying to cross the road,” he stated.
He added that wildlife officers were sent to the scene to “carry out an operation to monitor and capture the mother elephant in order to move her to a safer area.”
According to Mr. Yusoff’s assessment, the mother elephant is likely between 25 and 27 years old and weighs about 2.2 tonnes.
The young elephant’s remains have since been cleared from the scene and will be laid to rest, he confirmed.
