It is dangerous to stay under a tree during a thunderstorm because lightning often strikes tall objects, and trees are usually the tallest in an area.
When lightning hits a tree, the electrical current can jump to a person standing nearby or underneath it. This is known as a side flash.
Additionally, the electric charge can travel through the ground after striking the tree, which is called a ground current, and can harm anyone nearby.
Trees can also explode, drop heavy branches, or catch fire when hit by lightning, putting anyone taking shelter underneath at risk.
That is why experts strongly advise people to avoid trees during thunderstorms and instead find proper shelter indoors or inside a vehicle.
