In India, a temple chariot, or ratha, symbolizes divine movement, cosmic order, and devotion. Used in temple festivals, these chariots carry the deity’s idol through the streets, allowing devotees to pull the sacred vehicle as an act of worship.

This procession represents the god’s journey to bless the people and signifies the connection between the divine and the worshippers. The chariot also embodies the cosmic cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction, while symbolizing devotion, unity, and the spiritual path to enlightenment.

In ancient times, kings used temple chariots to reinforce their divine right to rule. Notable chariot festivals in India include the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Odisha, the Thiruvarur Chariot Festival in Tamil Nadu, and the Udupi Paryaya Rathotsava in Karnataka, all of which bring together thousands of devotees in a grand celebration of faith and tradition.
