Indonesia has experienced several major bridge collapses. One of the most notable incidents was the Kutai Kartanegara Bridge Collapse in East Kalimantan on November 26, 2011. The 1,911-foot-long suspension bridge, also known as the Mahakam II Bridge, collapsed suddenly while undergoing maintenance, causing vehicles and pedestrians to plunge into the Mahakam River. The disaster resulted in at least 20 deaths, dozens of injuries, and several missing persons.

Another significant collapse occurred in Pasuruan, East Java, in 2018, when the Widang Bridge gave way, sending trucks and motorcycles into the Bengawan Solo River. The incident caused multiple casualties and was attributed to structural weaknesses and overloading.
