Norway’s King Harald V, Europe’s longest-serving and oldest reigning monarch, has died at the age of 89, the Royal Palace announced on Friday, Aug. 28. His death came after years of health problems and a recent hospitalization for treatment related to a rare blood condition.

The Royal Palace confirmed his passing in a statement, explaining that Harald died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital. The statement read:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce that His Majesty King Harald passed away today. King Harald passed away peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday, Aug. 28 at 6:35 a.m.”

The BBC reported that the palace in Oslo said the King died at 6:35 a.m. local time, or 4:35 a.m. GMT, at the national hospital in the Norwegian capital.

Following his death, the royal flag above the palace was lowered to half-mast as Norway entered a period of national mourning ahead of his funeral. People also gathered outside the royal palace, bringing flowers and flags to pay tribute to the late monarch.

According to People, Harald’s death followed several years of health struggles, including multiple hospital stays in recent weeks as his condition worsened. He was hospitalized for the second time this year on Aug. 17 after experiencing side effects linked to ongoing medical treatment. At that time, the Royal House said he was expected to take two weeks of sick leave.

Harald was the first Norwegian-born king of Norway since the 14th century. Following his death, his son, Crown Prince Haakon, 53, is set to succeed him and will hold an extraordinary council of state with the government later on Friday.

Harald leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Queen Sonja, their two children, and five grandchildren. His granddaughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, will now become heir to the Norwegian throne.
