British author Sophie Kinsella, best known for her bestselling Shopaholic series, has passed away at the age of 55, her family announced on Wednesday, December 10. Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Sophie Wickham, had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.

In a heartfelt statement, her family shared, “We are heartbroken to announce the passing this morning of our beloved Sophie (aka Maddy, aka Mummy). She died peacefully, with her final days filled with her true loves: family and music and warmth and Christmas and joy.”

The statement continued, reflecting on the impact of her life and legacy:

“We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life. Despite her illness, which she bore with unimaginable courage, Sophie counted herself truly blessed—to have such wonderful family and friends, and to have had the extraordinary success of her writing career. She took nothing for granted and was forever grateful for the love she received.”

Kinsella had openly shared her health struggles last year, revealing that she was undergoing both chemotherapy and radiotherapy to treat a particularly aggressive brain tumor. Despite her illness, she continued to inspire readers worldwide with her writing.

Her literary career spanned decades, with her Shopaholic novels earning a devoted global following. The first two books in the series were adapted into the 2009 romantic comedy film Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher. Kinsella’s more recent works include The Burnout (2023) and What Does it Feel Like? (2024), both of which explored contemporary themes with her signature wit and charm.

Sophie Kinsella is not the only prominent international figure to have passed away recently, as media outlets have also reported the deaths of other notable personalities.
