Italian fashion pioneer Giorgio Armani, one of the most influential designers in the global fashion industry, has passed away at the age of 91. His company confirmed the news on Thursday, announcing that the creative force behind the Armani brand died “surrounded by his loved ones.”

“With infinite sorrow, the Armani Group announces the passing of its creator, founder, and tireless driving force: Giorgio Armani,” the fashion house said in a statement released on Instagram.

“Il Signor Armani, as he was always respectfully and admiringly called by employees and collaborators, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones,” the Armani Group’s statement continued.

The tribute emphasized his devotion to his craft and his company until the very end: “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections, and the many ongoing and future projects.”

The company revealed that his funeral will be a private affair, reserved for close family and friends. However, admirers and members of the public will have an opportunity to pay tribute in Milan, where a funeral chamber will be open on Saturday and Sunday.

Armani transformed the global fashion industry with his clean, sharp tailoring and understated sophistication. He launched his namesake label in Milan in 1975 and within a few years established himself at the pinnacle of high fashion.
