Terence Stamp, the English actor best remembered for portraying the villain General Zod in the original Superman films, has passed away at the age of 87, his family confirmed.

According to a statement provided to Reuters, Stamp died on Sunday morning, August 17.
"He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come," the family said. "We ask for privacy at this sad time."

Born on July 22, 1938, in Stepney, east London, Stamp came from a working-class background. Over a career spanning six decades, the Oscar-nominated actor appeared in notable films such as The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Far From the Madding Crowd, and Valkyrie.
