Portuguese footballer and Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a car crash in Spain on Thursday, July 3.

His 26-year-old brother, Andre Silva, a fellow pro footballer who played for Penafiel in the second tier of Portuguese soccer, also died in the accident.
According to The New York Times’ The Athletic, authorities said the crash occurred at 00:30 local time on Thursday morning on the A-52 — a 400km carriageway running from Madrid to the Spanish province of Galicia, north of Portugal — in the province of Zamora, in north-west Spain.
As per the report, the car occupied by Jota and Silva went off the road and suffered an impact, causing the vehicle to catch fire.

In a report by People, Jota’s unfortunate passing came just days after he married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, with whom he shares three kids. The couple tied the knot on June 22 in Porto, his home city.
Diogo Jota was a Portuguese professional footballer who played as a forward for Liverpool and the Portugal national team. He was known for his goal-scoring ability, versatility, and strong performances for both club and country. CNN noted that Jota earned 49 caps for the Portuguese national team, winning the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025. He also played an important role in Liverpool’s recent title-winning season, scoring six goals and providing four assists in 26 appearances.
