1954 was a great year for the Philippine (PH) national team when they joined the FIBA World Cup or Championship. KAMI learned that the national team was able to defeat the United States (US) and won the first and only medal of the Philippines in FIBA World Cup just yet..

According to a report by GMA News, the game between PH and US in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, dropped a 56-43 score, allowing the PH team to bag the bronze medal.

Team captain of PH team, Lauro Mumar, led the game with 14 points. In addition, “The Big Difference” Caloy Loyzaga was able to contribute 12 points, while Mariano Tolentino added 11 points.

In 1960, the first-ever Asian Basketball Championship, now called as FIBA Asian Championship, was held in the Philippines. Call it homecourt advantage, but the Philippines was able to win all the 9 games against different Asian countries and won the gold medal.

The last time that the Philippine national team won a medal in the FIBA Asia Championship was back in 2013. The tournament was held in the Philippines, and the national team brought home a silver medal.
