The basketball world is mourning the loss of Elden Campbell, a towering figure in the NBA whose 15-season career left a lasting impact on the league. Campbell, who spent nine seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers and later won a championship with the Detroit Pistons, passed away at the age of 57 on Monday, December 1.

The NBA’s official website shared statements from both Campbell’s family and the Detroit Pistons organization, expressing grief and celebrating his life and legacy.

In a heartfelt statement, the Campbell family remembered him as a man of faith and devotion.

“Elden was a man of faith who trusted in his lord and savior Jesus Christ. Husband, father, brother, cousin and friend. He was a man to whom family meant everything -- generous, funny, disciplined and kind, but could shut you down if required.”

“A man of God, he passed doing what he loved; fishing out on the ocean, enjoying his idea of an ideal day,” the family said. His cause of death was not disclosed.

The Detroit Pistons also paid tribute to their former teammate, highlighting his contributions on and off the court.

“The Detroit Pistons organization is deeply saddened and heartbroken by the news of Elden Campbell’s passing. A proud member of our 2004 NBA Championship team, Elden patrolled the paint with strength and skill, playing an important role during one of the most memorable chapters in franchise history. Beyond his contributions on the court, Elden’s calm presence and warm personality made him beloved by teammates, fans, and the community alike. Our hearts and prayers are with Elden’s family and friends during this difficult time,” the organization said.

Campbell was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers as the 27th overall pick in the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft. Standing at 6-foot-11, he became a mainstay in the Lakers’ lineup, appearing in 618 games and averaging 10.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game.

In addition to his tenure with the Lakers, Campbell played for several other NBA teams, including the Charlotte Hornets from 1999 to 2002, the New Orleans Hornets for the 2002-03 season, the Seattle Supersonics in 2002-03, and the New Jersey Nets in 2004-05. His time with the Detroit Pistons, from 2003 to 2005, was highlighted by his role in the franchise’s 2004 NBA championship, during which he played 95 games and averaged 5.0 points and 3.1 rebounds.

Elden Campbell is survived by his wife, Rosemary; his children, Jay Lee, Jael, Ariel, and Aaron; and his siblings, Elwayne, Sandra, and Charles Jr. His family, friends, former teammates, and fans across the basketball world are left mourning the loss of a man whose life and career touched so many.

Elden Campbell is not the only foreign sports figure to have passed away recently, as similar reports involving the deaths of other notable international personalities have surfaced across various media outlets.

Deng Mayar, 22, a member of Omaha’s basketball team, drowned on August 16 at Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, according to authorities. His 21-year-old friend, Sa Mafutaga, attempted a rescue but was unsuccessful and was hospitalized afterward. Hours later, rescue teams recovered Mayar’s body while his family waited nearby.

Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has passed away at the age of 46, the BBC reports. Police discovered his body in Hyde, Greater Manchester, but described the death as non-suspicious. Hatton won 45 of his 48 professional fights and became a two-division world champion before retiring in 2012.
