Gustavo Talmare, a 14-year-old rising baseball talent from the Dominican Republic, passed away after tragically drowning in a lagoon near one of the nation’s top academies.

According to the New York Post, which cited Diario Libre, Talmare’s body was discovered on Saturday about 40 minutes away from the academy. The young athlete, who earned the 2024 Caribbean Kids Series MVP title after hitting four home runs, had gone missing Friday night after swimming in Guerra’s Laguna del Toro, prompting overnight search and rescue operations.
Authorities have yet to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, but a police investigation is ongoing.

PhilSTAR L!fe, citing ESPN Digital, reported that Valentín Contreras Núñez of the Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League and academy owner Amaurys Nina confirmed Talmare’s passing.
“The boy's body was rescued by a member of one of the Dominican Republic's relief agencies. I can't explain what he was doing in that lagoon, or why he was there, which is 40 minutes from the academy. I don't have the details of how he ended up there, but I know the authorities are investigating the incident," Nina said.
Talmare had been regarded as one of the Dominican Republic’s most promising baseball talents. He excelled in the 2024 Caribbean Kids Series, where he was named MVP, and previously competed in the 2023 U-12 Baseball World Cup.
