Michigan resident Elaine Stypula, a 60-year-old ultrarunner, died after collapsing while competing in the Hardrock 100 race in Colorado on Friday, July 11.

According to a report by CBS News, Stypula collapsed on a high mountain trail outside Silverton only three hours after the start of the 102.5-mile endurance race in the southwest Colorado mountains.

New York Post noted that as per Silverton Medical Rescue, authorities and the rescuers found Stypula on the “steep, rugged, remote” Little Giant Trail near Gold Lake, which is part of the grueling race.

It was at 9:02 a.m. local time when emergency responders received a Search and Rescue call about a person receiving CPR, People reported. However, Stypula was pronounced dead at the scene 10:27 a.m. local time despite their efforts.

As of this writing, her cause of death has not been revealed.

Runners have a period of two days to finish the said race. Race organizers mentioned online that the average completion time is 40 hours. The race begins in Silverton and guides participants through Lake City, Ouray, Telluride, and Ophir before heading back to Silverton. It also climbs thirteen major passes above 12,000 feet in height, with the highest elevation on the route being the 14,048-foot summit of Handies Peak
