Speaker Martin Romualdez is stepping down from his position as leader of the House of Representatives.
Antipolo City 1st District Rep. Ronaldo Puno said Romualdez called lawmakers to a meeting on Tuesday and announced his decision to resign.
He also endorsed Deputy Speaker and Isabela 6th District Rep. Faustino “Bojie” Dy III as his preferred successor, asking party leaders to support Dy.
Puno explained that Romualdez’s decision was voluntary and had been considered for weeks. He said the Speaker wanted to protect the reputation of the House amid the growing controversy involving questionable flood control projects.

Lawmakers reportedly tried to convince him to stay, saying his resignation might cause instability, but Romualdez insisted on stepping down.
Reports confirmed that after a meeting in Malacañang, Romualdez agreed to resign.
On Tuesday night, staff already removed his nameplate and other items from his office, signaling a major leadership change in Congress.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who is Romualdez’s cousin, earlier stated that his relative and their allies would not be spared from an independent probe into flood control and infrastructure projects in the last decade.
Marcos emphasized that accountability should apply to everyone, regardless of connections.
Navotas Rep. Toby Tiangco previously claimed that Romualdez and former House Appropriations chairman Zaldy Co were behind billions of pesos in insertions that funded infrastructure programs, some of which were either substandard or never built.
The leadership shakeup marks a critical moment for the House as lawmakers prepare to choose a new Speaker. Dy is now being positioned to take over the post with Romualdez’s backing.
