Duterte, who is currently facing charges of murder as a crime against humanity before the ICC, was arrested in the Philippines on March 11 and subsequently transferred to The Hague, Netherlands. The case stems from alleged extrajudicial killings during his terms as Philippine president and Davao City mayor.
Duterte’s supporters are set to hold rallies in various parts of the country to mark his birthday. When asked about these planned demonstrations, Castro stated that the government would not interfere as long as the activities remain within legal bounds.
”‘Pag sumigaw na ibagsak ang gobyerno, isa ’yan. Kapag nagpatuloy ng pananalita to sow fear, ipromote pa ’yung hatred sa government, bordering the line of inciting to sedition. Dapat alam po nila ’yan,” Castro warned.
She emphasized that while protests are allowed, participants should ensure that their actions do not violate the law. “Huwag lamang po silang lalagpas at maituturing na ang kanilang ginagawa ay labag sa batas,” she added.
Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He left Malacañang on June 30, 2022. The newly inaugurated President of the Philippines is Bongbong Marcos who got 31 million votes in the May 2022 elections. The new Vice President of the Philippines is VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president.
Earlier, the former president was apprised of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine. In a video shared by GMA News, CIDG chief, Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, is seen reciting the Miranda Doctrine to the former president. The reading of the Miranda rights is a standard procedure for persons being arrested to ensure that the latter fully understands their rights upon their arrest. It can be recalled that the International Police (InterPol) has confirmed the issuance of the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the former president.
An earlier video showing former President Rodrigo Duterte’s longtime partner, Honeylet Avanceña, seemingly trying to prevent the former leader from being taken into custody has gone viral. The video, which was posted on the social media page of their daughter, Veronica or Kitty Duterte and shared by ABS-CBN news on its own page, has since then gone viral. The said video also captured snippets of conversations between Avanceña and the former leader.
