The photo of Medialdea at The Hague highlights the loyalty of Duterte’s inner circle as they face the international proceedings together. Duterte is currently detained in The Hague following his surprise arrest last week after the ICC issued a warrant of arrest for crimes against humanity linked to his administration’s alleged extrajudicial killings. The former president was intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport after a trip to Hong Kong.
The ICC case stems from thousands of deaths during Duterte’s antidrug campaign, many of which were alleged extrajudicial killings carried out by police and vigilante groups. Despite repeated denials from Duterte and his camp, international human rights groups and the ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor found grounds to pursue charges.
Duterte’s legal team, led by British-Israeli lawyer Nicholas Kaufman, has vowed to mount the strongest defense, expressing confidence that Duterte could be acquitted at the earliest stage of the proceedings.
Former Pres. Rodrigo Duterte was the 16th President of the Republic of the Philippines. He left Malacañang on June 30, 2022. The newly inaugurated President of the Philippines is Bongbong Marcos who got 31 million votes in the May 2022 elections. The new Vice President of the Philippines is VP Sara Duterte, the daughter of the former president.
Earlier, the former president was apprised of his rights under the Miranda Doctrine. In a video shared by GMA News, CIDG chief, Police Major General Nicolas Torre III, is seen reciting the Miranda Doctrine to the former president. The reading of the Miranda rights is a standard procedure for persons being arrested to ensure that the latter fully understands their rights upon their arrest. It can be recalled that the International Police (InterPol) has confirmed the issuance of the arrest warrant by the International Criminal Court against the former president.
An earlier video showing former President Rodrigo Duterte’s longtime partner, Honeylet Avanceña, seemingly trying to prevent the former leader from being taken into custody has gone viral. The video, which was posted on the social media page of their daughter, Veronica or Kitty Duterte and shared by ABS-CBN news on its own page, has since then gone viral. The said video also captured snippets of conversations between Avanceña and the former leader.
