Vice President Sara Duterte said she will not attend the third State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on July 22.

She shared her decision in an ambush interview during the inauguration of the Child and Adolescent Neurodevelopment Center at a hospital in Davao City on Thursday, July 11.

"No, I will not attend the SONA," Duterte said, according to a report by Inquirer.net.

She also briefly explained, "I am appointing myself as the designated survivor."

According to GMA Regional TV, a "designated survivor" in the United States is a person kept at a separate location to ensure that someone will assume the presidency in case all high-ranking officials face a catastrophic incident while they gather in a big event.

This will be the first time that Duterte will not attend Marcos' SONA since their tandem won the 2022 election.

Sara Zimmerman Duterte-Carpio, commonly known as Inday Sara, is a Filipino lawyer and politician who currently serves as the 15th vice president of the Philippines. She is notable for being the third female vice president, the third vice president from Mindanao, and the youngest vice president in the country's history. Duterte held the position of secretary of education until July 19, 2024. She is the daughter of the 16th president, Rodrigo Duterte, and has served as the mayor of Davao City from 2016 to 2022 and from 2010 to 2013. Additionally, she was Davao City's vice mayor from 2007 to 2010.

In a previous report by KAMI, Vice President Sara Duterte finally answered questions concerning the scar that was seen on her neck. In what journos called as a "slash scar," it was first noticed by the public on June 12. Initially, reporters tried to reach her office, but failed to get an answer with regards the scar. In a video posted on Facebook, the vice president addressed the scar by saying that "they tried but failed to slash me."

In another political story, Pres. Bongbong Marcos was recently asked about Bimby and Josh Aquino paying a visit to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos. On Tuesday, July 9, the sons of Kris Aquino dropped by the First Lady's office and gave her "pasalubong." The President then told the media that the reason why the two Aquinos visited his wife was to personally thank her for her "help in their travel arrangements." The head of the country also underscored that his wife is related to the Aquinos.
