Two people were killed and four others were injured when a gunman opened fire at a basketball court inside a condominium complex in Parañaque City on Wednesday night, according to a Southern Police District report.

“While the victims and witnesses were playing basketball at the basketball court at Azure Residence, they heard a loud noise,” the report said.
“Suddenly, the suspect entered through the main gate of the basketball court and started shooting [at a] group of people playing basketball.”

The incident occurred at 7:59 p.m., after which the suspect fled the condominium complex toward a nearby mall.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s name, identifying him only as a 59-year-old resident of Barangay Marcelo Green. The police have yet to confirm a motive for the attack.

In a follow-up report on Thursday, the National Capital Region Police Office said two victims were declared dead on arrival at 8:44 p.m. and 11:12 p.m. at the Ospital ng Parañaque District 2.

Meanwhile, the four injured victims are in stable condition at Ospital ng Parañaque and Parañaque Doctors Hospital. Four other basketball players who witnessed the shooting were unharmed.

Investigators recovered two deformed fired bullets, three metallic fragments, and nine fired cartridge cases from a 9mm pistol at the scene.

The Parañaque City Police Station is conducting follow-up operations, reviewing security footage, and coordinating with adjacent police units, including authorities on the nearby Skyway, to locate and arrest the suspect.

Authorities are urging anyone with additional information to come forward as the investigation continues, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in ensuring public safety and preventing further violence.

In a separate update, the Bacoor Component City Police have identified the man seen in a viral video attempting to open a vehicle as Joel Viola Matados, a resident of General Trias who is dealing with a medical condition. Family members said Matados had wandered away from home and appeared disoriented at the time of the incident. Motorist Lorie Sy described the frightening encounter, saying she remained locked inside her car as Matados repeatedly pulled on her door handle amid traffic. Authorities are urging the public to immediately report any sightings to ensure that Matados receives proper care and medical attention.

Advocacy groups are working alongside authorities to provide ongoing support and rehabilitation for the survivors, ensuring their safety and access to necessary medical and psychological care.
