Police investigators found that the revolver involved in the incident was old and already damaged.

According to the police, the two friends, aged 16 and 19, were unaware that the .38 caliber revolver still contained a live bullet.

“Ayon po sa ating mga imbestigador, pinaglaruan po 'yung baril ng magkaibigan. At pagkahawak po nitong 16-year-old na kaibigan nga po is aksidente po itong naitutok sa ulo at naiputok sa kaniyang kaibigan,” said Police Lieutenant Ken Ladyong Ada-ol of the Antipolo Police.
Further investigation revealed that the firearm had come from peers within their neighborhood and was unknowingly loaded with one round of ammunition.
The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the head and was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains in critical condition, according to relatives.
The victim’s mother described the incident as an accident.
"Siyempre, mga bata 'yan, ma'm, pinaglaruan. Basta alam nila, laruan nga. Akala nila hindi pumuputok dahil alam nila sira," she said.
“Para sa amin, disgrasiya (ang nangyari) dahil kaibigan niya, hindi po niya kaaway. Kaibigan at ka-close niya po 'yung gumawa na bata. Inosente po siya na paglalaro ang ginawa nila. Ang kamalian nila ay baril ang ginawa nilang laruan," she added.
The 16-year-old boy is now under the custody of the Department of Social Welfare and Development.
Authorities reiterated their warning against handling firearms.
“Sa ating mga kabataan, 'pag may nakita po tayong baril or napulot or nabigay sa kaibigan, 'wag po natin itong paglaruan kasi po delikado po ito,” Ada-ol said, urging the public to surrender any weapon to the nearest police station.
In another incident, a troubling viral video captured a Filipina being assaulted by a foreign national inside a shopping mall in Singapore, raising widespread public alarm. The Department of Migrant Workers confirmed that its labor attaché has already made contact with the victim and is providing assistance. “Medical assistance is the most basic there, and of course, filing of the complaint, our lawyer would stand ready to help her,” said Hans Cacdac. Authorities are handling the case as a physical assault and are coordinating with Singaporean counterparts to ensure the victim receives appropriate medical care, legal aid, and due process while the investigation proceeds. The victim’s family is likewise calling for justice following the shocking episode.
In a separate development, a family in Barangay Mayamot was shaken after CCTV footage showed a man rummaging through their bedroom as they slept on February 8, 2026. Homeowner Mary Rose Bustamante said several items were stolen, including mobile phones, wallets, and more than ₱20,000 in cash. Although some of the missing bags were later recovered in a nearby alley, the money was no longer found. Police identified the suspect as a local resident with previous links to burglary and carnapping incidents, prompting intensified operations to track him down and prevent further crimes in the area.
