Missing saleslady's body found in La Union; police probe suspected assault

The body of a missing woman was found in a grassy portion of Sitio Mallare in Barangay San Isidro, Naguilian, La Union at around 7:30 a.m. on Monday, February 2, prompting a police investigation into what authorities believe may be a case of foul play.

Family members positively identified the victim as Thelma Liza Cachero, who had been unaccounted for since the end of January.

According to her relatives, Cachero left their home in Sitio Lower Sapilang on the morning of January 30 to report for work as a saleslady at a mall.

Closed-circuit television footage showed her walking out of the house and heading toward the main road, where she was expected to hail a tricycle for her commute.

However, concern grew later that afternoon when the wife of her cousin went to her workplace to fetch her, only to be told that Cachero never showed up for her shift.

Efforts to contact her through her mobile phone were unsuccessful, further alarming the family.

Relatives then sought help from the public, hoping someone might have seen her or had information about her whereabouts.

Nearly three days later, her body was discovered in a grassy area not far from the community, bringing a tragic end to the search. The remains were immediately sent for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

While official results are still pending, the victim’s relatives said they observed indications suggesting she may have been stra*ngled, noting that her identification card was found wrapped around her neck.

Police authorities said a full investigation is ongoing as they work to establish the circumstances surrounding Cachero’s death and identify any persons who may be involved in the crime.

In other news, a man surrendered to authorities in Sto. Tomas on Sunday, admitting to the fatal stabbing of an acquaintance in Barangay Balelleng. The suspect claimed his actions were a desperate response to three separate instances where the deceased allegedly subjected him to forced physical violations. A sibling found the victim’s body on Sunday morning with a lethal throat injury, leading to the police recovery of the weapon used in the encounter. While h0micide charges have been initiated, police are currently validating the suspect’s claims of prior victimization to establish the full context of the crime.

Still in other news, two men wanted for 26 counts of serious felony charges since 2010 were finally apprehended by Angeles City police on Wednesday. Tracker teams located the suspects at a construction project in Barangay Cuayan, where they had allegedly been working to hide their identities for years. The duo had been evading justice based on 16-year-old arrest warrants that carried a no-bail recommendation due to the gravity of the accusations. The suspects are currently detained at the Angeles City Police Station 5 as the judicial system prepares to resume a legal process that has been stalled since 2010.
