The arrest, which took place on Monday, February 2, 2026, highlights the growing risks associated with digital privacy during electronic repairs.

The investigation began after the parents of a 17-year-old girl discovered that private photographs and videos of their daughter had begun circulating on various social media platforms.

According to the victim's statement, the content was leaked shortly after she entrusted her smartphone to the suspect for technical repairs.

Acting on the family's complaint, the PNP Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit-Caraga (RACU-13) tracked the suspect to his residence.

During the operation, authorities utilized a digital warrant to seize several electronic devices belonging to the technician.

Preliminary forensic examinations reportedly uncovered the victim’s sensitive files still saved on the suspect's personal mobile phone.

Police Colonel Lemuel Gonda, Chief of RACU-13, confirmed that the suspect did not resist arrest but will face severe legal consequences.

The technician is currently being charged with violations of Republic Act 11930, also known as the Anti-Online S3xual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Anti-Child S3xual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) Act.

This recent legislation provides more stringent penalties for individuals who facilitate or distribute exploitative materials involving minors, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a relative or a third-party service provider.

"This case serves as a warning to service professionals who abuse the trust of their clients," Gonda stated during a press briefing.

Cybersecurity experts advise the public to take proactive measures when bringing devices to repair shops.

Users are encouraged to utilize "Maintenance Mode" features, available on most modern Android and iOS devices, which lock personal data while allowing technicians access to hardware diagnostics.

For older models, experts recommend backing up files and performing a factory reset before handing over the device to ensure that sensitive information remains out of reach.

In other news, the search for a missing lawman ended in heartbreak after the remains of Police Staff Sergeant Renato Casauay Jr. were unearthed from a shallow, makeshift grave in a vacant Malolos lot. Casauay, who had been unaccounted for since his last sighting on January 24, was reportedly found buried under a layer of cement to conceal the crime. Lead investigators revealed a shocking catalyst for the violence, suggesting that the victim was killed following a simple joke that deeply offended the primary suspect. Bulacan police have launched a massive operation to capture the principal suspect along with eight other accomplices believed to be involved in the officer's death and burial.

The violence claimed a second victim—a 24-year-old student aspiring to be a police officer—who was fatally struck by a stray round while riding his bicycle in the vicinity. Forensic teams at the site collected 11 spent cartridges, marking the intensity of the gunfire that preceded a high-speed police chase along Quirino Highway. The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is currently analyzing surveillance footage and conducting field operations to track down the two gunmen who successfully evaded initial pursuit.
