A member of the Highway Patrol Group in Central Visayas lost his life after a passenger bus veered into his lane and struck him along a national highway in Naga City, Cebu, authorities confirmed on Monday.

The fatality was identified as Police Executive Master Sergeant Antonio Sando of HPG-Region 7. He was declared dead on arrival at the hospital following the crash, according to a report aired on GMA Regional TV Balitang Bisdak.

Initial police investigation showed that Sando was on his way home to Carcar City on Sunday after completing his duty. He was riding his motorcycle when the incident occurred in Barangay Inoburan.

Investigators said the bus driver suddenly swerved to avoid a collision involving two vehicles traveling ahead in the same direction. In the process, the bus crossed into the opposite lane, where it hit Sando.

Police Lt. Col. Verniño Noserale explained that the two vehicles in front of the bus had collided moments before the fatal impact. The bus driver attempted to steer clear of the crash but ended up entering the lane of the oncoming motorcycle.

Aside from the slain officer, another motorist who was riding behind Sando sustained minor injuries and was treated for his wounds.

The 43-year-old bus driver reportedly expressed deep remorse to the bereaved family of the police officer. Authorities said he is expected to face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in ho*micide and damage to property.

Meanwhile, the drivers of the two vehicles involved in the initial collision have already reached an agreement. Police are also tracking down another vehicle that reportedly left the scene shortly after the incident.

In a separate case, a 46-year-old traffic enforcer was killed in a vehicular accident in Barangay Barra, Opol on January 18, 2026. Police said the enforcer was heading toward Cagayan de Oro when he attempted to overtake another vehicle and slammed into an oncoming sedan driven by a 33-year-old man. The collision sent the sedan out of control and into a parking area, where five motorcycles were damaged. Authorities said the sedan driver was released on Monday, January 19, after an amicable settlement was reached with the victim’s family and the owners of the damaged motorcycles.
