According to a police report cited in a Tuesday broadcast of "Unang Balita," the elderly store owner was awakened by unusual noises coming from his shop before dawn.
He told investigators that he noticed someone attempting to open the store’s window, prompting him to step outside and confront the person.
Police said the suspect claimed that during the confrontation, the girl allegedly tried to strike him with a wooden plank.

He then fired his gun, hitting the teenager in the chest. The victim was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The suspect, who refused to face the camera, explained to authorities that he did not recognize the girl and was unaware that she was his neighbor.
He also maintained that he had no intention of killing her and insisted that his actions were driven by fear for his safety.
Despite his explanation, the senior citizen is now facing a ho*micide complaint in connection with the incident.
Police said the case remains under investigation as they continue to gather statements and review the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Relatives of the victim strongly denied allegations that the teenager was attempting to steal from the store.
They said she had no record of theft and suggested that someone else may have instructed her to commit the act.
Local authorities said they are looking into all angles of the case, including the claims raised by the victim’s family, to determine whether the use of force was justified and if additional charges may be filed.
