A court has found a mall security guard guilty of throwing a puppy from a footbridge in Quezon City in July 2023, which led to the animal’s death. Aside from a fine, the ruling also carries a prison sentence.
Animal Kingdom Foundation shared that it pursued a criminal case after the incident involving a puppy named Browny. In its statement, the group said the court found the accused guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
AKF said the security guard was sentenced to prison for a minimum of one year, six months, and one day, up to a maximum of two years. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of ₱100,000.
In case he cannot pay due to insolvency, subsidiary imprisonment will apply in place of the fine.

Aside from the fine and jail time, the court ordered the security guard to pay ₱20,000 in moral damages to the puppy’s owner. The amount will earn a six percent legal interest per year starting from the date the decision becomes final until it is fully paid.
AKF said the ruling honors the life that was lost and serves as a reminder that animals should never be treated as disposable. The group stressed that acts of cruelty carry real consequences under the law.
The foundation also said it will continue to speak up and fight for justice for animals who cannot defend themselves.
It added that cases like this show accountability is possible when animal abuse is reported and pursued through proper legal channels.
