The first victim is a one-year-old child who was allegedly offered for illegal adoption online in exchange for ₱25,000.

According to PNP-WCPC chief PBGen. Maria Sheila Portento, the child’s mother is three months pregnant with her eighth child and claimed she was not receiving support from her husband.

“Ayon sa kanya, itong binenta niya ay pampitong [anak] tapos buntis siya ngayon ng 3 months ulit. Hindi daw siya sinusuportahan ng kanyang asawa sa pagpapalaki ng mga anak niya,” said Portento.

She also explained that the child has different fathers, and the mother had other relatives caring for her other children.

The second victim is a three-month-old infant born in Vietnam to an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) mother and a Chinese-Vietnamese father.

Police reported that the mother returned to the Philippines three days after giving birth and allegedly attempted to sell the baby online for ₱75,000.

“Siguro, the way she assessed magandang lahi ‘yung bata binibenta niya ng P75,000. Nung tinanong namin bakit binebenta, according to her para makabalik siya sa Vietnam at magtrabaho ulit,” Portento said.

Both infants were immediately placed under protective custody and are now under assessment and intervention by local social workers to ensure their welfare.

The mothers declined to give statements and are facing charges for Tra*fficking in Persons and Child Tra*fficking under the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act.

The PNP reiterated its commitment to safeguarding children and warned the public against engaging in illegal adoption or tra*fficking activities.

In different parts of the country, a series of unusual and tragic incidents drew public attention. In Zamboanga City, emergency responders recovered a massive 10-foot python that had coiled itself inside a parked car. The rescue, recorded by the Bureau of Fire Protection, quickly spread online after the video went viral. Meanwhile, in Aurora, wildlife officials successfully released a Northern Luzon giant cloud rat back into its natural forest habitat, a move aimed at protecting the survival of the rare and timid species. In Libon, Albay, residents were alarmed when a five-meter oarfish—often referred to in local lore as a “doomsday fish”—was discovered dead along the shore of Barangay Pantao. Although the rare find sparked speculation about possible earthquakes, marine experts said they are studying environmental factors that may have caused the deep-sea creature to surface.

In a separate incident, a 46-year-old traffic enforcer lost his life in a road accident on January 18, 2026, in Barangay Barra, Opol. Police said the victim was riding his motorcycle toward Cagayan de Oro and attempting to overtake another vehicle when he collided head-on with an oncoming car driven by a 33-year-old man. The force of the crash sent the sedan swerving into a nearby parking area, where it struck and damaged five parked motorcycles. Authorities later confirmed that the car driver was released from police custody on Monday, January 19, after an amicable settlement was reached with the victim’s family and the owners of the damaged motorcycles.
