A Japanese tourist’s first visit to Kalibo, Aklan to witness the famous Ati-Atihan Festival took an unfortunate turn after he reportedly fell victim to a salisi gang, resulting in the loss of his wallet and unauthorized credit card transactions amounting to hundreds of thousands of pesos.

According to a report by Super Radyo Kalibo correspondent Darwin Tapayan aired on Super Radyo DZBB on Tuesday, the victim is from Osaka, Japan and had traveled to Kalibo specifically to experience the world-renowned festival.

While inside the festival area, the tourist was busy taking videos of the celebration when the incident occurred.

Based on the victim’s account, a woman suddenly bumped into his sling bag amid the crowd.

He did not immediately realize that his wallet had already been taken. Inside the wallet were his driver’s license, several identification cards, and mixed currencies estimated to be worth P40,000.

The situation worsened after the tourist later discovered that his credit card had been used by the suspects.

Authorities revealed that the unauthorized transactions reached a total amount of approximately P300,000, further adding to the victim’s distress.

CCTV footage obtained by investigators showed a woman believed to be the primary suspect and a member of a salisi gang.

The suspect was allegedly assisted by two accomplices who acted as blockers to divert attention and prevent the victim from noticing the theft.

Police officials said the investigation is ongoing as they work to identify and locate the suspects involved.

Authorities also reminded festivalgoers, both locals and tourists, to remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas, and to secure their personal belongings to avoid similar incidents during large public events.
