Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña, a respected former cabinet secretary and longtime Metrobank Foundation president, has passed away at the age of 72 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.

The Metrobank Foundation announced his passing in a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, January 13:
“We mourn the passing of former Metrobank Foundation President, Aniceto “Chito” Sobrepeña, who passed away peacefully.”
The statement highlighted Mr. Sobrepeña’s decades of service and leadership:

“Mr. Sobrepeña devoted over 30 years of exemplary service to the Metrobank Foundation. He also served as Executive Director of the GT Foundation, Inc. At the time of his passing, he was Vice Chairman of Manila Doctors Hospital, Chairman of Manila Tytana Colleges, and a Trustee of the GT Foundation, Inc.”
The foundation further emphasized his lifelong commitment to the common good:
“He dedicated his life to the pursuit of the common good. Starting from his years in public service and government leadership, he exemplified integrity, compassion, and principled leadership, setting new standards for corporate social responsibility and opening opportunities for Filipinos from all walks of life.”
It concluded with a message of sympathy for all who knew and worked with him:
“Metrobank and the Metrobank Foundation extend their deepest condolences to his friends, family, and colleagues.”
Sobrepeña, widely respected for his decades of dedication to public service and corporate philanthropy, played a key role during the country’s transition to democracy. As a former cabinet secretary, he exemplified principled leadership in government. Later, as the longtime president of the Metrobank Foundation, he championed programs supporting education, healthcare, and social development for Filipinos from all walks of life.
Aside from Sobrepeña, several other local personalities have also passed away recently.
Donna Pangilinan-Simpao, who recently died, was remembered by her brother, Sen. Kiko Pangilinan, in an emotional social media tribute shared with a photo of them embracing. In his message, Kiko reflected on their close bond and expressed how deeply he will miss her, honoring her love, strength, selflessness, and dedication as a compassionate physician. Maria Socorro “Marissa” Sanchez, one of the country’s most celebrated tennis players and a pioneer of the sport in the 1970s, passed away at 69. Her nephew, DFA Assistant Secretary Elmer Cato, confirmed her death in a heartfelt statement shared publicly. Beyond her historic Southeast Asian Games medal, Sanchez continued shaping Philippine tennis through her work as a coach and sports consultant, mentoring and inspiring future generations of athletes.
