The blast also left his companion seriously injured, prompting renewed calls for vigilance as authorities investigate how the minors gained access to the fireworks.
According to a report by Bea Pinlac on Monday, police reviewed CCTV footage from Barangay 223 that showed the two boys walking together while carrying fireworks they had picked up.
The video later captured them stopping along a sidewalk, where they sat down and attempted to light the items.

Moments after the fireworks were ignited, a loud explosion rocked the area. Thick smoke quickly spread, startling residents and passersby who rushed to see what had happened. One of the boys was declared dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries.
The other child was immediately taken to the hospital, where doctors determined that he needed surgery. His mother recounted the last time she spoke with her son before the incident.
“Sabi niya po, lalabas lang daw po, may bibilhin daw po siya. Biglang ‘yun po, may narinig kaming malakas na sumabog. Tapos ‘yun nga daw po ‘yung anak ko,” says Candy Delos Reyes.
Police identified the fireworks involved as a piccolo and another fountain-type firework that has yet to be fully identified.
Investigators noted that these types of fireworks can be extremely dangerous, especially when handled by children.
Barangay Kagawad Cyron Reyes said the use of fireworks is strictly prohibited in their community, adding that officials regularly confiscate fireworks found in the possession of minors.
He urged parents and residents to remain alert and immediately report any sightings of illegal fireworks.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including where the fireworks came from, as the community mourns the loss of a young life.
In a separate incident, authorities are looking into an alarming act of intimidation after a parcel containing live .45-caliber bullets was delivered to a home in Barangay 5-D. The ammunition reportedly carried the names of three local government volunteers along with an explicit death threat. Members of the audit team, Ernie Empemano and Rene Amorao, said they believe the warning is connected to their ongoing review of major infrastructure projects approved under the previous city administration. Despite the apparent effort to pressure them, the volunteers said they will continue their work, emphasizing that only those involved in questionable transactions should fear transparency. Police Lieutenant Colonel Redentor Tiraña said the San Pablo City Police have opened a formal investigation to trace the source of the threatening package.
Elsewhere, large sections of Davao City experienced a power outage on Christmas morning after a man climbed a utility pole and walked along high-voltage power lines in Barangay Ilang. To carry out a safe rescue, Davao Light and Power Co. temporarily shut down its 69kV transmission lines, leaving areas from Tibungco to Panacan without electricity for several hours. The man was eventually rescued by personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection and local police. Authorities later said he was under the influence of dru*gs and experiencing hallucinations, believing he was fleeing an imagined threat. Power service was restored by early afternoon, and officials confirmed that the man will face charges for alarm and scandal due to the disruption caused.
