A quiet night in a remote barangay in Alimodian, Iloilo turned into a heartbreaking tragedy when a 25-year-old man was fatally shot during a struggle with his own father. The incident happened around 10 p.m. on December 5 in Barangay Cabacanan Rizal, a village located about 31 kilometers from the town proper. According to police, the father, identified only as alias Jenn, a 61-year-old widower and farmer, had just arrived home after attending a neighbor’s birthday celebration.

Lt. Rolly Sorongon, the deputy police chief of Alimodian, shared that there was no known conflict between Jenn and his son, Keven, before the incident. Instead, the trouble reportedly began when Jenn came home with a friend named Jomar. An argument broke out between the two men, and in the height of the tension, Jenn allegedly went inside the house to retrieve a firearm. As soon as Jomar saw the weapon, he fled the scene, leaving Jenn inside the house armed.
Keven, who had been drinking at a nearby neighbor’s home, heard the commotion and immediately rushed back to their house. When he saw his father holding a gun, he tried to intervene and attempted to disarm him. What followed was a desperate struggle between father and son—one that would tragically end with a gunshot. Police said the firearm went off during the scuffle, hitting Keven on the left side of his abdomen.
Neighbors quickly responded upon hearing the shot and helped carry Keven to another village, where personnel from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office were already waiting. He was immediately taken to Aleosan District Hospital. Sadly, doctors declared him dead on arrival due to the severity of his injuries.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a barangay official placed Jenn under citizen’s arrest. He was later turned over to authorities as they began investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police are now determining what exact charges will be filed, emphasizing the need to examine all angles, including whether the firearm was legally owned and the specific sequence of events that led to the fatal discharge.
The case has stirred the small farming community, where many residents know each other well. Jenn, described as a farmer who lived a quiet life after becoming a widower, had no previous record of violence or disputes with his son. The suddenness of the tragedy left neighbors stunned, especially since Keven reportedly stepped in only to stop the conflict and prevent harm.
