Several Christmas lights at the Subic municipality in Zambales sparked and caught fire instead of blinking as intended.

Witnesses said sparks appeared before the lights caught fire, but the flames were quickly put out.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the fire was caused by loose wiring at a breaker, which ignited the decorations.

Christmas lights are a common cause of holiday fires, especially if they are old, damaged, or improperly stored.

Authorities urged the public to buy only certified Christmas lights, such as those with the Philippine Standards Mark (PS) and ICC Mark.

It’s important not to save money on unsafe lights, as this can put households at risk. Old or dusty lights, or those stored poorly, are more likely to catch fire.

BFP also advised that Christmas lights should not be left on for long periods and should be unplugged when leaving the house or sleeping.

Overused or “overheated” wires can spark a fire, and pests or animals can damage the wires, increasing the risk.

For outdoor decorations, lights should be monitored during rain, even if labeled as “all-weather.”

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) also reminded people to avoid wrapping lights around trees in ways that can harm them or disturb wildlife, including birds and insects.

Following these precautions can help ensure a safe and environmentally friendly holiday season, keeping both people and nature protected.

In the Philippines, the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), under the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), is responsible for handling fire-related cases.

The agency responds to fire emergencies, investigates their causes, enforces fire safety rules, and works to prevent fires.

Local fire stations manage on-the-ground operations, while the central BFP oversees policies, training, and nationwide coordination.
