The theft occurred early Wednesday morning, November 26, when the homeowner suddenly realized their lights had gone out around 9:00 a.m.

Initially suspecting a standard brownout, they grew suspicious when their electric meter still showed activity.

Upon checking outside, they discovered the shocking truth: their aluminum service drop wire—the crucial cable connecting their house to the main utility pole—had been cleanly severed and stolen.

Fortunately, a vigilant neighbor's security camera captured the entire incident. The footage revealed the suspect, identified by barangay officials as a notorious local resident, quickly coiling and stuffing the approximately 50 meters of valuable wire into his backpack before making a hasty getaway.

The crime is particularly impactful, as it directly affects the quality of life for residents, especially those who rely on a consistent power supply for medical or academic needs.

The homeowner lamented the incident, explaining the ripple effect of the theft: “Nagulat kami, akala namin brownout so lumabas ako. Upon checking ko ‘yung wire roon putol. May seniors kami roon na hindi puwedeng mainitan tapos may mga bata rin na kailangan ng mga kuryente para sa online classes nila.”

The victim was forced to spend over PHP 2,000 just to replace the stolen wire and restore power to the household, highlighting the tangible financial burden petty criminals inflict on hard-working citizens.

According to Irene Cajucom, a Barangay Desk Officer for Barangay 162, the suspect is far from a first-time offender.

He is well-known in the area and is reportedly a repeat offender with a clear record of theft. Cajucom confirmed that the same individual was captured on CCTV in October, snatching a cellphone from another resident. "May record na po talaga siya ng pagnanakaw. ‘Yung kable lang po talaga ng mga wire, ng mga kuryente po ang talagang kinuha niya," she stated.

The affected homeowner has formally filed a complaint with the Caloocan police, who have intensified their manhunt for the suspect.

The incident underscores the persistent challenge faced by urban communities in dealing with career criminals who continue to evade long-term detention.

It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and surveillance technology in both deterring and solving low-level but highly disruptive crimes that directly compromise neighborhood safety and stability.
