The catastrophic accident resulted in the immediate death of one rider and left another with severe, life-altering injuries—including the loss of both legs.
The tragedy, which unfolded on Saturday, November 16, 2024, was captured on security footage, showing the terrifying speed and trajectory of the truck as it barreled out of control.
The video shows the dump truck suddenly appearing in the lane designated for oncoming traffic, where it relentlessly struck the two unsuspecting motorcycles.
The impact was devastating and swift. One rider was reportedly hit directly and suffered fatal injuries to the head, resulting in instantaneous death at the scene.
The second victim, another motorcycle rider, sustained grievous trauma to the lower body, leading to the traumatic amputation of both legs. The rider’s back-rider was also injured in the violent collision.
Authorities were quick to respond to the multiple-casualty incident. In an initial investigation, the truck driver, whose name has not yet been released, claimed that the primary cause of the catastrophic swerve was brake failure.
Furthermore, the driver claimed he was attempting to avoid hitting a passenger jeepney, which was reportedly loaded with commuters, but tragically failed to spare the two smaller motorcycles directly ahead of the jeepney.
The driver of the dump truck was immediately taken into custody by the local police and is currently being held for questioning regarding the reckless nature of the incident.
As of the time of the report, the driver has yet to issue a public statement regarding the accident.
The tragedy has predictably left the victims' families reeling from the sudden and senseless loss and trauma.
The family of the deceased rider has announced their firm intent to file criminal charges against the truck driver.
Similarly, the second rider, who now faces a painful and protracted recovery and adjustment to life without both legs, is also determined to pursue legal action.
This horrific event serves as a grim reminder of the deadly consequences of poorly maintained vehicles and the immense danger heavy vehicles pose on public roads.
The authorities are currently examining the truck's maintenance records to verify the driver’s claim of mechanical failure and determine the precise charges to be filed, which are likely to include Reckless Imprudence Resulting in Hom1cide, Serious Physical Injuries, and Damage to Property.
