Residents, however, said they were blindsided by the situation. Many hurriedly left the building after realizing there was a fire, with some just arriving home from cemetery visits for Undas.

“Grabe yung pag-alala ko kasi siyempre si Lola, yung kasama nga ng mga aso, sobrang hirap bumaba lalo 11th floor kami,” shared tenant Trisha Javier.

Several occupants complained that no alarm sounded and that sprinklers never activated. “Wala kaming naririnig na alarm, wala,” resident Winnie Tropicales said, adding they only learned about the incident when another unit owner alerted their Viber group.

Paguntalan assured residents the incident will be examined thoroughly.

“We will look into that, we will properly investigate the matter,” he noted. Fire authorities also plan to inspect whether the building’s fire detection systems were functioning.

Fire crews managed to extinguish the flames shortly before 10 p.m. Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire and estimating the extent of property damage.
