The horrific crime, which took place on the morning of October 24, 2025, was captured on the church's closed-circuit television (CCTV) system.

The footage, obtained by the police as part of their investigation, paints a harrowing picture of the events.

It shows the couple seated together in a pew. According to Police Lt. Col. Dindo Juanito Alaras, the Chief of Liloan Police, the pair were initially conversing when their discussion escalated into a heated argument.

The situation rapidly deteriorated, turning physical as the husband allegedly attacked and choked the victim until she collapsed to the floor.

The couple’s child later identified their parents in the CCTV footage, confirming that the two had a history of marital conflict.

The investigation has uncovered a deeply troubled history between the victim and the alleged suspect.

Further inquiries revealed that the suspect, who hails from Camotes Island along with the victim, had previously been jailed in Negros Occidental for violating the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children (VAWC) Act (Republic Act 9262).

That case was filed by the very woman he is now accused of killing.

In a baffling turn of events, however, police stated that the victim herself was the one who posted bail for the suspect's release from prison for reasons that remain unclear.

This detail adds a layer of complexity and profound sadness to the tragedy, raising questions about the dynamics of their relationship and the pressures that may have led to the fatal confrontation.

Police are still uncertain about the suspect's actions immediately after the victim fell. Footage shows the man interacting with his wife’s motionless body—investigators are trying to determine if he attempted to revive her or continued the assault.

The gravity of the situation is further compounded by information from the couple's child, who disclosed that the suspect may be suffering from a mental health condition. This possibility complicates the case, but investigators maintain their focus on locating the suspect, who remains at large.

In response to the unprecedented desecration of the sacred space, the San Fernando El Rey Parish Church has been temporarily closed.

This closure, mandated by the Archdiocese of Cebu, is necessary for a "rite of reparation," a spiritual practice involving purification and the offering of prayers following a grave incident within a church.
