• PHIVOLCS issued a "destructive tsunami" warning, predicting life-threatening waves over one meter above normal tide levels
• Coastal residents in seven provinces across Visayas and Mindanao were strongly advised to evacuate immediately to higher ground
• The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center also alerted nearby countries, including Indonesia and Palau, to the potential for hazardous waves
A strong offshore earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.6 struck the waters near Mindanao on Friday morning, October 10, prompting the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) to issue an immediate and urgent tsunami warning for a vast stretch of the country's Pacific coastline.

The seismology agency cautioned that a “destructive tsunami is expected with life-threatening wave heights,” triggering mass evacuation protocols across seven provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
The powerful tectonic event occurred at 9:43 a.m. (local time), with its epicenter traced approximately 62 kilometers east-southeast of Manay town in the coastal province of Davao Oriental.
Experts noted the extremely shallow depth of the quake, recorded at just 10 kilometers beneath the seabed, a factor that significantly amplified the resulting seismic shock and tsunami potential.
The tremors were reportedly felt strongly across Mindanao and even in parts of the Visayas, including Cebu.
PHIVOLCS’s advisory was unambiguous, forecasting that the coastal areas of Eastern Samar, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, Surigao del Sur, and Davao Oriental were at imminent risk.
Residents in these provinces were strongly advised to evacuate immediately to higher ground or move further inland, away from the immediate waterfront.
The agency predicted that the first tsunami waves—expected to measure more than one meter above normal tides and potentially higher in confined bays and straits—would begin arriving between 9:43 a.m. and 11:43 a.m. and could continue for several hours.
The warning extended beyond the Philippines’ territorial boundaries. The Honolulu-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) confirmed a hazardous tsunami threat, warning that dangerous waves were possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter.
The PTWC specifically noted that waves up to three meters (about 10 feet) above tide level were possible along some Philippine shores closest to the epicenter, with smaller but still hazardous waves projected to affect nearby nations like Indonesia and Palau.
Boat owners were also given strict instructions to secure their vessels or move into deep offshore waters to prevent disaster.
Initial reports from the Davao Oriental region confirm widespread panic and some degree of infrastructural damage.
Governor Edwin Jubahib was quoted saying people fled their homes and places of work as the shaking was "very strong." Partial damage reports indicated structural compromises to commercial buildings and churches in Manay town.
Furthermore, the powerful main shock has been succeeded by a series of strong aftershocks, with magnitudes up to 5.9, contributing to the public's fear and ensuring that the threat of damage and instability remains high.
The Philippines, situated directly along the geologically volatile Pacific Ring of Fire, is prone to such catastrophic events.
Authorities are maintaining heightened vigilance and urging the public to strictly adhere to official evacuation orders as the aftershocks and potential tsunami risk persist.

Still in other news, a classroom ceiling at Lapu-Lapu Elementary School in Davao City collapsed during class on October 7, 2025. Approximately 40 Grade 4 students sustained minor injuries but were safely evacuated. The quick execution of the 'duck, cover, and hold' drill by the teacher helped prevent serious harm. School authorities have reported the incident to DepEd and DPWH, and the school has shifted to a blended learning setup.
