At the time of its completion, the bridge was lauded as one of the most advanced infrastructure projects in the Philippines, showcasing earthquake-resistant design and durability.

Tuesday night’s quake put that claim to the test, and the bridge passed with flying colors.

Officials assured the public that no structural damage was reported on the Marcelo Fernan Bridge following the tremor, even as other buildings and roads across Cebu suffered cracks and collapses.

The structure’s resilience has been credited to its robust engineering and careful planning, which prioritized disaster readiness from the very start.

With aftershocks expected in the coming days, the bridge remains a critical passageway for rescue and relief operations.

Authorities emphasized the importance of building disaster-resilient infrastructure, noting that the Marcelo Fernan Bridge stands as a model for future projects.

The quake may have shaken Cebu, but the bridge’s strength offered a reminder: investing in quality infrastructure is investing in safety.
