The actor-turned-politician himself clarified that what was mistaken for a “dirty finger” was, in fact, his index finger raised as part of a religious gesture practiced by Muslims.
On Facebook, Padilla shared several photos clearly showing his raised index finger to counter the allegations.

Ang hintuturo, index finger/fore finger ay ang siyang nagagamit ng mga muslim para isagawa ang kalimah LA İLAHA ILALAH,” he wrote in the caption.
Kalima La ilaha ilalah is an Islamic affirmation of the oneness of God. In his post, Padilla emphasized that the gesture he made was not disrespectful, but instead a symbolic expression of his Muslim faith.
In another post, Padilla uploaded another set of images of himself taken during an ecumenical prayer at the Senate. One of the photos show him doing the gesture.
Padilla’s clarification comes after circulating online posts alleged that he had disrespected the national anthem and the event where it was performed. By releasing both his statement and photographic evidence, he sought to set the record straight, stressing that his gesture was one of reverence, not insult.
