Residents joined forces to fight the fire while waiting for authorities. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said the victims were rushed to the hospital. However, the 3-year-old girl and the helper later died due to suffocation.

The 6-year-old victim remains in critical condition. Fire Superintendent Elaine Evangelista, Malabon’s fire marshal, said the child suffered burns on 90 percent of her body and may need to be transferred to another facility for treatment.

The fire reached first alarm and was declared under control by 12:38 a.m. Investigators are still looking into the cause of the blaze.

Neighbors expressed grief over the tragedy, with many recalling how the helper tried to shield the young child during the fire.

Authorities reminded the public about fire safety measures and the importance of being alert to prevent similar incidents.
