Four people, including three young children, were killed after a cement mixer truck lost its brakes in Bansalan, Davao del Sur.

According to a report on GMA Regional TV One Mindanao, the accident happened on Friday afternoon on a downhill road in Sitio Balutakay, Barangay Managa.

Police said the 39-year-old driver lost control of the truck as it went down the slope.

The vehicle flipped on its side and struck three children who were walking along the roadside.

The victims were identified as two boys and a girl, aged 9, 10, and 12.

Rescuers rushed the children and the driver to the hospital, but they were declared dead on arrival.

The truck helper was also hurt in the crash. He told authorities that the truck had brake trouble before the accident.

Investigators are now looking into the incident. Authorities are also trying to reach the families of the children for further statements.

Residents in the area expressed sadness over the tragedy and urged stricter safety checks on large vehicles passing through steep roads.

Police said they are reviewing the condition of the truck and will determine if negligence was involved.

The tragic crash highlights once again the dangers of heavy trucks on downhill roads, especially when vehicles are poorly maintained.
