Family joined forces to lift coffin to higher place when floodwater enters home

A family in Mandaue City, Cebu, worked together to move a coffin to the upper part of their house when floodwaters entered during a wake.

They also carried their grandmother, who was asleep at the time, to a safer place as the water reached her bed.

The Mandaue City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) reported that more than 600 families were affected by flooding after the Butuanon River overflowed.

In Barangay Paknaan, a man tragically lost his life after he was swept away by the flood while trying to chase a taxi he thought was occupied.

Cebu City also experienced heavy rains due to localized thunderstorms. In one area, a creek overflowed, and the rushing waters from the Guadalupe River damaged a footbridge.

In Barangay Pulangbato, part of the riprap beside a creek collapsed because of the strong current.

According to the Cebu City Social Welfare Office, more than 130 families were affected by the flooding in the city on Friday night.

There were also reports of landslides in some parts of Cebu. In one case, soil crashed into a house, but the five residents inside were unharmed.

Another landslide blocked a road, leaving some motorists stranded for almost four hours before clearing operations were done.

The floods and landslides highlighted the dangers of sudden heavy rains in the province, which not only destroyed structures but also claimed lives and displaced hundreds of families.

Police authorities said the school has a security guard, but, being a familiar face in the school, the suspect managed to easily get in and out of the school. The suspect said he was there to talk to his wife and settle their misunderstanding, but unfortunately, it led to a big arguement.
