A senior citizen reportedly lost all his savings after falling victim to a scam that used a fake SSS downloadable app.

According to his daughter, Jobelle, her father received a call around 11 a.m. on August 14 from a woman who introduced herself as an SSS employee.

The caller offered help in generating a Payment Reference Number (PRN) and sent him a link to download what she claimed was the updated SSS app.

The victim, who needed a PRN for his transaction, downloaded the app and was guided through the installation while the scammer stayed on the line.

After more than an hour, the app was still “installing” and the phone buttons no longer worked.

When Jobelle arrived, she suspected it was a scam and removed the SIM card, which stopped the installation.

Soon after, they discovered that money from the victim’s bank accounts and e-wallets, including BPI, BDO, GCash, Maya, and Landbank, had been drained within two hours, even without providing a password, OTP, or personal details.

Jobelle said they immediately reported the incident to the banks, blocked the cards, and are preparing to file a case under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

She also warned the public not to trust links sent through calls or emails and to always download apps only from official stores.

She stressed that people should avoid linking all their accounts online and limit the amount of money kept in e-wallets.

Jobelle also shared that scammers are now using government-related apps like National ID registration to deceive people, especially seniors.
